There are many types of sprinkler systems that are available for lawn and garden use. However, the two main types are fixed spray sprinklers, and rotor type sprinklers.  Both of these designs cab be environmentally friendly.  Properly designed sprinkler systems can conserve water by increasing the amount or irrigation and positioning the sprinkler heads in the best locations. They can also conserve water by being regulated by a timer.  All of these conservation methods can be applied to both types of sprinklers.  You will reap the benefits not only in your yard, with its green plants and trees, but in your wallet as well.

Fixed spray sprinklers are very similar to a shower head.  They are designed to spray water in one area.  For gardens these can be hung so that the water falls onto the plants much like rain.  For yards they can be placed throughout the yard and spray as large or as small of an area as you allow.  Because these sprinklers are stationary the plants and grass closest to them tend to receive more water than those that are father positioned.  However, with the right design in yard and system fixed spray sprinkler heads can be great.

Rotor type sprinklers are not stationary.  They have a moving water spray that can cover various sizes and shapes.  These types of sprinkler heads are great for yards of all shapes and sizes.  They allow you to personalize your sprinkler system so that every inch of your lawn or garden can be reached.  Because they produce a stream of water that is sprayed the water is distributed evenly throughout the yard.  Plants that are close or far from the sprinkler will get the same amount of water.

Individual garden and lawn sprinklers are an alternative to a sprinkler system. These sprinklers are a functional way to irrigate a yard. These sprinklers can be stationary or active. Stationary garden sprinklers are usually attached to a garden hose. The home or business owner can use a garden or lawn sprinkler by attaching it to a hose and placing it in a garden or on a grassy area. These types of sprinklers allow small areas to be watered quickly and efficiently.

Oscillating sprinklers are another type of garden irrigation option. They water in a rectangular pattern. The area that an oscillating sprinkler can cover depends on the type of sprinkler, the size of the hose, and the water pressure that is available.

There are three other common options for garden and lawn sprinklers. These are pulsating, rotary, and traveling sprinklers. Pulsating sprinklers are often considered the most effective and versatile sprinkler available. They only need a low water pressure, and they are wind resistant. A pulsating sprinkler is most often constructed out of brass, zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, or a combination of two or more of these materials.

Rotary sprinklers spray from the tips of two or three spray arms. These tips are fixed, but adjustable and they offer great coverage for a large area.

Sometimes, some of the most amusing and entertaining sprinklers to watch are traveling sprinklers. They come in three main types: self propelled, wind up, and tractors. Self propelled sprinklers can cover large and irregular areas, while wind ups are not the ideal choice for an irregular lawn. Wind up sprinklers follow a cord that is laid out and have two available speeds. Tractors drag the cord behind them and they also have two speeds. There are many color and design options for all of these types of lawn sprinklers.
